Harley-Davidson’s next cheaper electric motorcycle will arrive in June

Harley-Davidson is riding on its positive 2021 earnings report, showing a whopping 32% increase in revenue. Even more exciting news for electric motorcycle fans came in the company’s announcement during the earnings call that its next electric motorcycle, the LiveWire Del Mar, would debut next quarter.

Harley-Davidson caused a stir in 2019 when it launched its first production electric motorcycle, the LiveWire. In 2021, Harley-Davidson decided to turn its ongoing electric motorcycle operations into a sub-brand, also called LiveWire.

The company then announced late last year that the LiveWire brand would go public through a SPAC deal that is expected to close by the end of Q2 2022.

Also coming in the second quarter of this year is LiveWire’s next electric motorcycle model known as the Del Mar.

This news was just confirmed by Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeitz during the company’s earnings call.

The LiveWire Del Mar will be the first bike produced on LiveWire’s new ARROW platform, designed as a lower-cost foundation for several new electric motorcycle models.

Instead of a traditional frame like the one seen on the LiveWire One, which was the new name for the Harley-Davidson LiveWire after the sub-brand spin-off, the ARROW platform uses a structural battery that largely replaces the framework.

The battery was designed in-house by Harley’s LiveWire engineers and is comprised of 21700 size cylindrical Li-ion battery cells.

Unlike the LiveWire One’s complicated Revelation motor which runs parallel to the bike’s long axle and requires a bevel gear to rotate the output shaft 90 degrees, the ARROW rig appears to use a simpler direct-drive motor mounted coaxially with the swingarm. It’s a design we’ve seen before, perhaps most famously in the Zero SR/F and SR/S electric motorcycles.

We don’t know much else about the Del Mar’s specs or performance, other than the company has described it as a “powerful, nimble electric motorcycle and the basis for future variants.”

These future variants are even less clear, although Harley already has plans for the S3 and S4 models, which could be even lighter and more affordable electric motorcycles.

As it stands, the LiveWire One is currently priced at $21,999, which is a significant reduction from the original HD LiveWire’s original price of $29,799 in 2019.

The Del Mar is likely to help push LiveWire’s prices even lower, making it more competitive against other major electric motorcycle manufacturers.

Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire team likely has more lightweight electric motorcycles and mopeds in the works. Two Harley-Davidson concepts for an electric dirt bike and an electric moped made occasional appearances for several years. The electric moped in particular could be an interesting way for the company to capture market share among young drivers with lighter wallets.

Harley-Davidson also launched its e-bike project as a new e-bike startup known as Serial 1.

We tested the e-bikes before they were released to the public and were very impressed with the build quality and feature list, including things like an integrated glove box that have never been seen on e-bikes. e-bikes before.

The company has seen strong demand for its e-bikes, especially for a new e-bike startup in a premium category. Interestingly, the company has combined marketing tactics from the conventional e-bike industry along with Harley-inspired motorcycle industry moves. Serial 1 has undertaken several one-off custom themed e-bike projects, building beautiful one-of-a-kind bikes that have been auctioned off for thousands of dollars above retail price, often benefiting charity.

Series 1 also created a hilarious short, taking advantage of its “outsider” status to confuse cycling snobs and old-school Lycra cycling culture in general, in favor of a more inclusive cycling world with electric bikes.
