Mike Jones confident and at ease in Darwin

ASBK 2022 – Round Four – Hidden Valley

Last year wasn’t how you wanted to spend the weekend, so there’s some unfinished business and now that you’re on the Yamaha, are you in a pretty good frame of mind?

Yeah, that’s it. Obviously, the start of the year has been very good. I gelled well with the R1. The Yamaha Racing Team has been fantastic, and I think the package is capable of winning wherever we go, so I’m really excited to go to Darwin and have a chance there. I really like the circuit there. I think it suits my riding style and I think with my comfort on the bike it will definitely put us in a good position to get some good results out there. It’s a great track. A fantastic track. I really like riding there. It’s unreal.

This weekend you will not be happy unless you are on the podium?

Yes exactly. That’s realistically our goal every race weekend now, to be at least on the podium every race weekend and ultimately fight for the win..”

So what is the difference for you with the Yamaha?

Ultimately for me, I think it’s the handling characteristics of the R1. It’s maneuverability. I find that the input I make as a rider on the bike actually has a positive effect. I have more to do with making him do what I want him to do.

“The Ducati, you just had to fight all the time and everything I tried to do on the bike was the opposite. It didn’t do what I wanted it to do.

“Jumping on the R1 is like that. Everyone rides a little differently and every rider is individual, but the R1 works well for me and my riding style. I gelled with the bike and everything works great. Last time I rode a Yamaha was in 2013 and it was an R6 so I had never ridden an R1 before that so I’m happy.”

Can’t wait to find the 2 + 4 concept?

Absolutely. The atmosphere and everything there is fantastic. There’s so much action going on, especially with the drag shows also happening at night. The action continues all weekend and the atmosphere is really good. It’s great for us because there are the fans and the spectators, the number of people who are there. It’s good to show so many people what we do on the track.”

And you, what is your favorite part of the song?

Ah man. It’s perfect! Probably the last section of left turn 10. Easy to run wide there. You have to have your eyes on the ball there, then the right left “flip flop” down the hill, then you enter the straight.”

And the wall has been pushed back too, so that’s good.

Yeah, that’s fine. I knew they were doing some construction up there and they mentioned they moved the wall so obviously it’s a lot better for all of us.

Does it form like a pretty tight group in the mix up front?

Yeah. This year, there’s anyone of about six or seven of us who could fight for the win. I look forward to all three races.

The slightly different format of the Hidden Valley event – where there are three races instead of the usual two – also has slightly different television schedules and broadcasters.

As has happened in previous years, Channel 7 will show races one and three live alongside regular TV coverage of Supercars.

After the event, ASBK TV will work with television production partners AVE to create a special-edition rerun of ASBK Round 4 – Darwin. This special edition will air on SBS – Sunday, July 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. AEST.
