Franky Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha) had a tough day at work in Indonesia after a penalty amplified his poor qualifying.

After dominating the FP4 session in 1m31.968s, an early crash at the start of Q2 saw the Italian sliding at high speed on the wet areas of turn five. His M1 faded as he rolled through the gravel.

Morbidelli failed to improve on his final effort, finishing the session 12th overall, but with post-flat penalties issued for “irresponsible conduct causing danger to other competitors” during the FP3 practice start procedure, he will line up 15th on Sunday’s grid.

“Today wasn’t our day,” confirmed Morbidelli from Mandalika.

“I made a mistake on a wet area on the first attack, then on the second attack I was too easy and couldn’t improve my lap time.

“It’s a shame but we are confident because we have a good pace. It’s true. We’ll try to fine-tune other things for tomorrow, and we’ll try to have a good race. We’re starting from a long way behind, we all know it’s going to be difficult, but we’re going to try anyway. We have good speed, so who knows?

“About the penalty, that’s fair. It was my fault. I made a mistake and I’m sorry. I won’t do it again,” he concluded.
