In a conversation with Tsang-Chih Chu (Kurachi), the director of Maxxis Tires India, we understand how the Covid crisis has helped Maxxis turn tables into a learning opportunity, what plans and products are in the works. .

When the Covid crisis hit India, it had a huge impact on the auto industry, which was already going through tough times. It also impacted OEM suppliers as vehicle sales declined. When we talk about OEM suppliers, we tend to forget one important part of a vehicle: the tires.

The tire industry is huge. It is aimed at passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, utility vehicles of all sizes and electric vehicles. To better understand the impact of the industry, Express Mobility contacted Tsang-Chih Chu (Kurachi), the director of Maxxis Tires India.

“The covid pandemic has created countless challenges for the automotive industry as well as the tire industry. At Maxxis, we have turned these challenges into opportunities, achieving the highest Original Equipment sales after the pandemic with an average tire sale of over 2.4 lakh, ”said Tsang-Chih Chu. Maxxis Tires had sufficient supply and storage of raw materials to fulfill OEM orders. He added, “As we prepare for the holiday season and the market opens, we are seeing green shoots of recovery.”

Regarding OEMs, the Director said: “We have partnered with Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India Limited, Yamaha Motor India and Suzuki Motorcycles. We are rapidly expanding our portfolio according to new trends and market demand. Maxxis manufactures two-wheeler tires for the commuter and performance segment, with the current portfolio covering almost 82%. “We plan to increase it by more than 90% this year,” adds Tsang-Chih Chu.

He further adds: “Maxxis plans to launch products in the cruiser / tourist segment. We have launched the M922F tubeless tire for electric two-wheeler models. In addition to this, we are further strengthening our product portfolio and recently introduced the Maxxplore, M116 Rib models in over 15 sizes and the sportbike segment. The tires are available as a replacement alternative for the Bajaj Pulsar (150,160, 180, 200 and 220), TVS Apache (160, 180, 200), Yamaha R15, Yamaha FZ, Honda Hornet and other models.

The manager adds: “In addition, the tire range is covered by an unconditional 5 + 1 year warranty with Maxxis two-wheel tires. This unconditional warranty is a no questions asked offer that applies to all unusable and irreparable tires.

For those who are not familiar, Maxxis sponsors motorsport events in various categories. “Internationally, we sponsor many series and events, fostering the growth of cycling, motorcycle racing, ATV racing and auto racing on and off the tracks,” said Tsang-Chih Chu. Maxxis has also been part of the Dakar Rally since 2013 and in the 42nd edition he became the main sponsor of the Dutch team led by Tim Coronel.

Maxxis has also taken initiatives in India to empower women in the country. Through its “Women in Front” initiative, Maxxis encourages Indian women to experience the freedom to ride and challenge gender stereotypes. Tsang-Chih Chu added, “Through this initiative, we have provided women with relevant safety training and practices that will help them take the front seat and prepare for their own trip without fear or hesitation. “

Speaking about some of the technologies involved in manufacturing tires for the current demand, the manager said, “Maxxis has used the latest technology in its tires. We offer the M922F range, which are low resistance tubeless tires designed specifically for electric two-wheelers. The tires are made of a lightweight rubber compound, which can reduce energy consumption by 5-10%.

“In addition, our Extramaxx tires are made from aramid fiber, the same one used to make bulletproof vests. This leads to better control and minimizes the risk of punctures. It also reduces rolling resistance and improves stability and life.

Commenting on the upcoming projects, Tsang-Chih Chu said, “Various sports bicycle tires with different applications for road and weather conditions will be introduced shortly. We will also be launching products in the cruiser / touring segment. Apart from this, we have put many products in the mode of developing new products for electric vehicles by examining their potential in the coming times, which will help us to capture a 15% market share by 2026. . “
