Name released in Pennington County fatal crash

What: Single motorcycle accident

Where: US Highway 385, Mile Post 96

24 km north of Hill City, SD

When: 10:33 p.m., Saturday September 3, 2022

Driver: Paul Smith, 72, Zumbrota, MN, Fatal Wounds

Vehicle: Harley Davidson touring motorcycle 2012

HILL CITY, SD – A man from Zumbrota, MN has been identified as the person who died late Saturday night in a motorcycle accident north of Hill City.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2012 Harley Davidson Touring motorcycle was traveling southbound on US Highway 385 when it crossed the centerline in the northbound lane and struck a guardrail.

Paul Smith, the 72-year-old driver, was ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
