The NEO-based electric vehicle is in preparation for the Indian market

The Yamaha NEO electric scooter has been launched in the past in Europe where it sells alongside a comparable scooter in the 50cc segment. The NEO uses a 2.5 kW motor coupled to a 50.4V, 19.2Ah lithium-ion battery capable of delivering up to 68km of range (in dual battery configuration).

Yamaha electric scooter in India

The Japanese car brand had recently presented the Yamaha NEO and Yamaha EO1 electric scooters at a dealer conference. This limited event was held to gauge dealer reaction to the products. The survey revealed a requirement for a daily runabout of 25-35 km. The NEOs in the single-battery configuration run for 37 km before discharging. To sell in the Indian market, Yamaha needs to extract more range from the scooter.

Indian consumers, given the competition, now expect around 100km of real-world range. Yamaha Motors India President Eishnin Chihana said that reducing the range of an electric scooter by 100 km is a difficult task. “Those who are capped at 25 km/h can achieve this, but if you have performance levels up to 45, 50 or 60 km/h, an actual range of 100 km is very difficult,” added Chihana.

There are currently several offerings in the Indian electric scooter market that allow users to travel around 100 km in the real world. Yamaha’s new scooter, if and when it is launched, will face such rivals.
