Design

When it comes to the design segment, the R15 series has hardly disappointed its followers over the years. It is certainly Yamaha’s most iconic bike in Nepal and one of the best bikes that has been around for years. The fourth generation of the R15 series, R15 M is definitely a crowd pleaser. The bike flaunts a new design, inspired mainly by its older brother Yamaha R7.

This is probably the best looking R15 bike to date. The front of the bike looks slimmer as the company focuses on a more aerodynamic design. With new graphics, the R15 M also gets a bi-functional LED light on the front and main LED lights on the side, giving it more of a big bike look. This is also the same bi-functional Class D LED unit seen in the Yamaha MT 15. The bike gets a gold-colored brake caliper and the top cap is also embossed with the R15M branding.

The bike also gets a new advanced all-digital LCD meter console with street view and a dedicated track mode. Street view displays normal content like speed, trips, mileage and distance traveled while track mode displays information like a stopwatch and a tachometer that starts at 6,000 rpm. Meanwhile, the rear part of the motorcycle resembles its predecessor Yamaha R15 V3.0. Although similar in appearance, the new launch’s air ducts are larger; the exhaust muffler also looks different this time around.

Performance

The new R15 M has the same 155cc engine as the previous version of the bike, but comes with added features. The bike only has an electric starter and has a similar drivetrain to the R15 V3 BS6. The 4-stroke, SOHC, 4-valve engine can generate a maximum power of 18.4 hp at 10,000 rpm and can generate a maximum torque of 14.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The bike is mated to a six-speed gearbox and can reach a top speed of around 155km, which is an insane figure for a 155cc bike.

To improve the performance of the bike, Yamaha has included many features on the R15 M. The bike benefits from Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology. This system provides torque for easy low-end operation, ensuring a good amount of power and torque throughout the rev range. The bike also features an assist and slipper clutch to reduce clutch pull weight and provide low-stress shifting during deceleration.

The R15 M is also fitted with a quick shift/shift as standard. This feature allows the user to shift without a clutch, meaning it eliminates the need to use the throttle clutch before and after a gear change. The bike is also equipped with a traction control system, which can reduce the chances of the wheels spinning or spinning due to loss of traction.

Security and other features

The R15 M gets disc brakes at both ends. It gets a 282mm disc up front and a 220mm disc out back. In addition to a dual-disc brake, the bike is also equipped with dual-channel ABS for added safety. The assist and slipper clutch on the bike will help reduce clutch pull, resulting in low-stress shifting during deceleration. In addition, it also prevents excessive engine braking.

The use of technology has made cycling more exciting. The new R15 M features the Y-connect app which displays phone notifications on the instrument cluster display. Thanks to this, the user will be able to know the calls, SMS, emails, the status of the connectivity of the application and the status of the battery level of the phone from the instrument cluster itself.

With the help of the app, users will also experience:

  • Fuel consumption tracking
  • Maintenance recommendation
  • Last parking spot
  • Malfunction notification
  • Towers Dashboard
  • Rankings

The bike features a familiar delta box frame seen on the R15 series and a gray-colored aluminum swingarm. The R15M is the first bike in the R15 series to finally have inverted front forks (USD) with 37mm inner tubes. Yamaha claims this setting is ideal for sporty handling on twisty roads. Inverted front forks improve stiffness and provide stability when cornering at high speeds or under heavy braking. Likewise, it has a bent type mono-cross link suspension at the rare end. It rolls on 17-inch radial tubeless tires, the front tires measure at 100/80-17 while the rear measures at 140/70R17.

Notable features of the R15 M are:

  • New graphics
